Nichols Pottery Studio

  Barbara R. DeTullio

To better understand and appreciate the work that emerges from The Nichols Pottery Studio is to better understand the ancient craft itself.

“When we produce a single piece of pottery, be it functional or non-functional art,” Barbara DeTullio often tells her students, “we create from a medium taken from beneath the earth’s surface as well as an energy pulled from beneath the surface of who we are as people.” Therein lies the beauty of this ancient craft.

This discovery came to Barbara at an early age during her study of art, design, printmaking, painting and Raku. What emerged in that period of time was a deep exhilaration for working at the potter’s wheel. Here she began to study the complex calculations of glazing as well as the broad range of possibilities available in this creative process. Today, the work she enjoys most is integrating her pottery with weavings, driftwoods and other natural materials.

Barbara holds degrees from Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts and Southern Connecticut State University. She has also studied at The Full Circle Studio in Bridgeport, Connecticut, The Clay Art Center in Port Chester, New York, The Silvermine School of Art in New Canaan, Connecticut, the Lexington Avenue YMCA Art Studio in New York City and The Art Center Manatee in Bradenton, Florida.

Her work shows annually at a wide range of juried shows (see EVENTS calendar) in Connecticut and Florida. She is frequently a guest artist on request.

Nichols Pottery Studio is located in the village of Nichols, Trumbull, Connecticut.
